Houston performed the operatic soprano melody on the Aretha Franklin hit, Ain't No Way. In 1967, The Sweet Inspirations sang background vocals for The Jimi Hendrix Experience on the track "Burning of the Midnight Lamp". In 1969, they were hired to sing backing vocals for American singer Elvis Presley in Las Vegas on his return to live performances during July and August 1969. Following the release of her debut album, Houston's contract was sold to Janus Records in 1970. She recorded another album and several more singles in the early 1970s, which included the original recording of Jim Weatherly's "Midnight Train to Georgia" in 1972, later a number one hit for Gladys Knight & The Pips.
The Sweet Inspirations is the self-titled debut album by American recording soul/gospel female group the Sweet Inspirations, released in 1967 by Atlantic Records. Led by Cissy Houston, the Sweet Inspirations were highly-in-demand female back-up singers featured on some of the most important pop and soul recordings of the 1960s and '70s. The Sweet Inspirations recorded by themselves for the first time in April 1967 for Atlantic Records. That session produced the first two singles released by Atlantic, a version of "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)," a song previously recorded by The Staple Singers and a soulful version of "Let It Be Me", a French song which had been a pop and R&B hit for Betty Everett & Jerry Butler in 1964 . In 1967, the group did backing vocals for the Jimi Hendrix single "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" which was later featured on the album Electric Ladyland in 1968
The Sweet Inspirations – The Sweet Inspirations were an American R&B girl group founded by Emily Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston, and sister of Lee Warrick. The line-up included Judy Guions, Marie Epps, Larry Drinkard, Nicholas Drinkard, Ann Moss, Lee, at that time, Sylvia Shemwell replaced Doris, while Cissy Houston took over from Dionne, with Dee Dee Warwick as the group’s official leader. A Gamble & Huff composition, Gotta Find Me A Brand New Lover appeared on the fifth album Sweet Sweet Soul. Also included from that set are That’s The Way My Baby Is, Ann disappeared during a tour with Elvis Presley and did not return to the group. A final Atlantic session in June 1970 brought the group its last two singles for the label, This World, and Evidence, in 1973, Estelle, Myrna, and Sylvia recorded an album for Stax Records.
