Helena Hauff - Qualm mp3 flac

Album · 2018 · 12 Songs.

Qualm is the new album by Helena Hauff, released via Ninja Tune. The title has a duality that Hauff enjoys - the German word Qualm ( kvalm) translates as fumes or smoke, whilst the English meaning refers to an uneasy feeling of doubt, worry, or fear, especially about one's own conduct. Helena picks out Miss Kittin & The Hacker and Toktok vs. Soffy O as inspirations but it was the self-titled album from 2001 by electro icon Radioactive Man that was "a real eye-opener" providing the stimulus for her to dive in and immerse herself in the music and culture. At university Helena studied first for a Fine Art degree, but whilst she enjoyed the emphasis on experimentation and artistic freedom, she realised that she didn’t have an innate need to make visual art, the prerequisite for a career in that oeuvre according to her lecturer.

Qualm is the second studio album by German electronic music DJ and record producer Helena Hauff. It was released on 3 August 2018 by Ninja Tune. The album was critically acclaimed and the track "Hyper-Intelligent Genetically Enriched Cyborg" was named as one of the best electronic tracks of 2018 by Pitchfork. In comparison to her previous album, Discreet Desires (2015), the tracks on it had more traditional song structure and they were "more poppier.

Helena Hauff - Qualm As a producer, Helena Hauff practices a style of music that's conceptually romantic and sonically anything but. She's a student of the Bunker Records school, the long-running label from the Netherland's West Coast whose artists record raw jam sessions using limited gear. The electronic music scene has a soft spot for these types of artists. It might not have changed in 30 years, but it still sounds more futuristic than anything else. On Qualm, Hauff's second album (if we don't include the extended 2015 release A Tape), she continues to tread this mucky path, showing us both this music's appeal and its limitations.

High fidelity has never been Helena Hauff’s bag. Once, in what she’s described as her most disastrous DJ experience, an angry clubgoer berated her from the crowd, shouting, Can’t you hear how fucking shit all your bass drums sound? But as any fan of Wolf Eyes or Black Flag or the Jesus and Mary Chain could tell you, for many listeners, fucking shit is the whole point. Qualm is the Hamburg musician’s second album, and it is largely of a piece with everything she has released over the past five years, including 2015’s A Tape, a sort of pre-debut LP collecting early sketches and stragglers, and her proper debut, Discreet Desires, from the same year. Her productions stem from her tastes as she honed them as a resident at her hometown’s Golden Pudel, a notoriously go-for-broke underground club.

With ‘Qualm’, Helena Hauff has created the record we both wanted and needed. It’s a statement of romantic infatuation amongst an otherwise hash, twisted and raw landscape. The Hamburg musician’s second album is a spartan mix of techno, acid, EBM, and coldwave. Even at her most damaged, Helena Hauff’s take on noise is nothing short of opulent.

Love the complexity, the brutality, the mood. And yes, psychedelia !
very good techno´n electro album - raw, basic, groovy, funky. very cool.
Music with no soul, it is only banging techno/electro.All tracks sounds similiar (for who want to be objective)It is dance tracks that seems boring when we think we are in 2018 and if we look what been made. One star, sorry.
I didn't like it at first either but I changed my mind. I really think you are missing something great. There is actually a lot of complexity and psychedelic energy in it, and it is very pleasing to the ear up loud on a good sound system.
janh24 Anyone interested in using this reviews section to comment on the music itself? Record is mediocre, pressing is quite good, even if I'm not really into heavily distorted electro.Has a very flat but aggressive mood, I'd say nothing special as an album, but it has some great club weapon as well as some chill tunes to dip into in the noon.Vinyl weight is loveble (it comes without innersleves, at least mine did) I bought it without knowing what it was, and I'm sincerely planning to trade it (just because I'm not djing this often anymore...)
