Thriller is the sixth studio album by American singer Michael Jackson, released on November 30, 1982, in the United States by Epic Records and internationally by CBS Records. It explores genres similar to Jackson's previous album, Off the Wall (1979), including pop, post-disco, rock and funk.
The "Thriller" single reached No. 1 in four countries in 1984, topping the . Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart as well as charts in Spain, France and Belgium. The song peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Thriller the first album to feature seven Top 10 singles. The Recording Industry Association of America certified "Thriller" Gold and Platinum on December 4, 1989. The groundbreaking short films for the Thriller album, starting with "Billie Jean," following up with "Beat It" and culminating with the epic, nearly 14-minute "Thriller," truly expanded the possibilities of "music video" as art form. I wanted something that would glue you to the set, something you'd want to watch over and over," Michael wrote in his 1988 memoir Moonwalk.
Thriller was such a massive success, it ended up becoming the best-selling album of all time, selling 65 million copies to date. On January 31, 1983, Thriller officially went RIAA Platinum. Most recently, the album went RIAA 33x Platinum on February 16, 2017, surpassing Diamond status threefold and being certified for over 33,000,000 album units. The album has also gone 2x Diamond in Canada, Diamond in Mexico, Argentina, and France, 16 Platinum in Australia, 13 Platinum in the UK, 12 Platinum in New Zealand, 8x Platinum in the Netherlands and Austria, 6x Platinum in Switzerland, 4 Platinum in Sweden, 3 Platinum in Germany, 2 Platinum in Denmark, and Platinum.

That sum blends traditional album sales (one album sale equals one unit), tracks sold from an album (10 tracks sold equals one unit) and on-demand audio and/or video streams (1,500 streams equals one unit). Thriller continues to maintain its place as the highest-certified album ever, ahead of Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, with 29 million. It was last certified on Jan. 30, 2006.
Off the Wall was a massive success, spawning four Top Ten hits (two of them number ones), but nothing could have prepared Michael Jackson for Thriller. Nobody could have prepared anybody for the success of Thriller, since the magnitude of its success was simply unimaginable - an album that sold 40 million copies in its initial chart run, with seven of its nine tracks reaching the Top Ten (for the record, the terrific "Baby Be Mine" and the pretty good ballad "The Lady in My Life" are not.

In the three years since Michael Jackson’s first solo album, Off the Wall, sold 7 million copies and spawned four hit singles, black music has veered away from the danceable but ultraslick style that Off the Wall epitomized. From Prince to Marvin Gave, from rap to Rick James, black artists have incorporated increasingly mature and adventurous themes - culture, sex, politics - into grittier, gutsier music. But the superficiality of that damnably catchy hit belies the surprising substance of Thriller. Particularly on Jackson’s own compositions, Thriller‘s tense, nearly obsessive sound complements lyrics that delineate a world that has put the on the defensive.
