Paul Julian Banks (born 3 May 1978) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and DJ. He is best known as the lead vocalist, lyricist, and guitarist of the rock band Interpol Skyscraper in August 2009 under the name Julian Plenti. His solo material is now recorded under his real name. As a singer, Banks' voice lies in the baritone range.

Introducing Julian’s latest project with Nels Cline, Scott Colley and Tom Rainey: Nels Cline 4. 'Currents, Constellations' is out 4/13 on Blue Note Records.

When Banks came out with his new Julian Plenti moniker, promises of a more electronic sound, and –wait for it- a cocky, sexy feel, one would be forgiven for being a bit wary of what he had in store, or for being downright scared after getting a glimpse of that album cover (I mean, just look at that thin. It’s a schizophrenic mess, utterly failing as a teaser for Julian Plenti. With this type of introduction and Paul Banks’ established pattern of getting worse with each progressive release, it would’ve been a miracle if his debut album wasn’t a bottom of the barrel misfire, getting released only because of the half-interesting name behind it instead of the material inside. On Turn On the Bright Lights, rhyming couplets like Stories are boring and stuff/she’s always calling my bluff were excused in the name of atmosphere, and on Antics, pole dancing cars were forgiven because the songs were still pretty good.

The Julian Plenti stuff was my first identity as a musician. When I was in college in New York (at NYU), I would play out under that name even before Interpol put out its first record. Julian Plenti is what I was doing before I met Daniel and joined the band he had formed with Carlos D. But that music sat there for many years while I did Interpol. Then it came to a point where it was unhealthy for me as an artist to have songs from my teenage years playing in my head forever and not externalize them. It’s been ten years since Interpol’s first album came out. Looking back, how do you feel about it as your introduction to the public? I don’t really listen to Turn on the Bright Lights, but I’m super proud of it. The major facet about Interpol always is that these other guys in the band are amazing. I love what we do as a band.
