The saga of Cold Lake, the fourth studio album by Celtic Frost, remains one of the strangest stories in heavy music history. This seminal Swiss extreme metal band, fronted by the legendary Thomas Gabriel Fischer (aka "Tom G. Warrior," formerly "Satanic Slaughter") was known for taking bold artistic leaps with each new album. To be fair, Cold Lake was the end result of several years of turmoil in the Celtic Frost camp. Thomas Fischer had actually dissolved the band at the end of the Into The Pandemonium tour, as he was burned out from the stress of being Celtic Frost's sole songwriter and composer. However, he still owed Noise Records several more albums to complete Frost's contract, so he rebuilt the band with an all new lineup that included guitarist Oliver Amberg, bassist Curt Victor Bryant, and drummer Stephen Priestley.

After the massive artistic success of Into the Pandemonium, Celtic Frost leader Thomas Gabriel Warrior was abandoned by his other bandmates and left to re-create the band. On top of that, Celtic Frost's fanbase had expanded into a literate bunch who desired the avant-garde tendencies of the group and waited for yet another landmark album. So when Warrior appeared with teased hair and a traditional metal sound, the backlash was legendary. History has painted Cold Lake as a pop-metal disaster, often branding Tom Warrior's new lineup and image as a calculated plan for financial success.

Regardless of the music not being entirely unique or memorable Cold Lake is not an unbearable or awful album. The problem with Cold Lake is the music is just a little below average. And while yes Celtic Frost stopped doing what they were good at and changed gears Cold Lake is not the equivalent of having your ears drilled out. Mainly the issue with this album is we have nothing here that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. The songs are basic and easily forgettable
