Yakooza - Cocaine The controversially titled "Cocaine" has been labelled as the most requested track at retail and dance radio. The track blends elements of hard house and soft trance to appeal to a mixed dance crowd. The use of subtle vocals and soft drums mellows the track on various occasions before building up to a multitude of synths, cymbals and electronic effects. The Flash remix takes a slightly different arrangement with additional percussions and effects but ultimately the three mixes of "Cocaine" are very much the same as each other

The tracks Radio Edit and Public Domain's 'Operation Blade (Bass In The Place London) (7" Radio Edit)' were the first real dance tracks that got me interested in the scene. This was the time before I cared about genres, BPMs, samples and incorrect tracklistings, it was all about the music. Only later did I find out that these were Trance and Hard Trance tracks, probably because I was only 11 and had never heard anything other than what Video Hits and Rage played. It didn't help living in a location with basically no dance music influences whatsoever. The popularity of the CD meant that in excess of 25,000 copies were sold in Australia alone, quite an achievement. 'Stronger' is also featured on the disk, which nearly a better track than 'Cocaine' with its acid bleeps and sweeping melody. Both tracks have harder, full version mixes by Flash and DJ Wag.
Where I live, Yakooza's "Cocaine" is surprisingly popular, even now - years after it was produced. There seem to be a large group of kids about my age (born between roughly '86-'90) that love this song. None of them really know what it is - it's always referred to as techno, which it is not - but they all know the tune and go crazy to it. This is especially odd as I don't really know of it ever having been played a lot on commercial radio or anything, so I have no idea how they really know it. The tune is pretty cool, but certainly not as cool as many kids say - some say it's there favourite song of all time, etc. Anyway, it has this infectious high-pitch, yet really cold tingle that cuts through the air (on the full 8 minute version it is introduced really well, built up nicely), then in comes this odd pounding mid-range noise before a distinctive pounding bass takes it away. The lyrics, "Cocaine", really just give the tune a name and a theme. Personally I prefer the radio edit, it gets to the point more quickly - though is too short for any kind of rave scene. Cool tune. Good for anyone into harder dance - especially if they're only just discovering it.
