For the live album by Neil Young, see Sugar Mountain - Live at Canterbury House 1968. Sugar Mountain" is a song by Canadian folk rock singer and composer Neil Young. Young composed the song on November 12, 1964-his 19th birthday-at the Victoria Hotel in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay), where he had been touring with his Winnipeg band the Squires. Its lyrics are reminiscences about his youth in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
For many years Sugar Mountain was a coveted non-LP B side - a Neil Young ballad about childhood’s end written before he was out of his teens and taped during this solo engagement shortly before the release of his first solo LP. The song was a rare flick of retrospect. Young charges forward here, playing half of the imminent Neil Young in pristine, tremulous-vocal form and reclaiming six of his Buffalo Springfield songs, including Expecting to Fly, majestically scored for 1967’s Buffalo Springfield Again yet as powerful here without a stitch of strings. T his remarkable time capsule reveals Neil Young testing reaction to his post-Buffalo Springfield solo career over two nights in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Forty years later, the two-track recordings of those shows are finally released. Stripped of the ornate arrangements of his self-titled 1968 debut album and with no harmonica in the toolbox yet, this is just Young, a guitar and his thoughts. Ten tracks of nerdy asides and witty revelations break up the music, giving a thrilling 'Neil Young in your living room effect'
Sugar Mountain (Intro), 00:29. I've Been Waiting for You, 02:04. Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, 04:43.
As a live document, Sugar Mountain stands at an interesting point in Young’s timeline: post-Buffalo Springfield, pre-CSNY and several days before the release of his first solo album
