In private, her preference was for young men. The poet Sterling Brown tells of approaching her as a fan with the musicologist John Work. She immediately propositioned them as she was having trouble with her young musicians. Brown wrote a moving poem about Ma Rainey and her huge popularity with Southern audiences.

Album Screamin ‘And Hollerin’ The Blues (The World Of Charley Patton). Booze and Blues Lyrics. Went to bed last night and boy I was in my sleep I went to bed last night and I was in my sleep Woke up this mornin', the police was shakin' me. I went to the jailhouse, drunk and blue as I could be I went to the jailhouse, drunk and blue as I could be But that cruel old judge sent my man away from me.

These 28 tracks are some of the earliest Blues recordings ever made so, despite re-mastering, they might sound a little scratchy to modern ears, but there is nothing wrong with the quality of the music. From famous songs like 'Match Box Blues' and 'See My Grave is Kept Clean' to novelties and religious tunes, this album gives fine examples of Lemon's slide guitar and boogie styles. Bessie smith - the essential bessie smith. In 60s America, a new audience for the Blues meant that young men like Paul Butterfield, who learned his harp skills in South-side Chicago clubs where he was often the only white face, could sell millions of albums. Joe bonamassa - dustbowl. This album is a sublime example of modern Blues-Rock, with a combination of slow, soulful Blues, 'film-noire' soundtracks and good-time boogie numbers.

Criteria: These "Blues" albums were chosen to showcase the artists musical vision through their impact, originality, influence, creative inspiration & musical quality. This list does not include "greatest hits, best of, live albums, box sets OR albums by those artists who did not exhibit a clear blues thread throughout their careers. Last Updated: 2007-02-16.

The blues artists talked, the rockers listened. Without the blues there’d be no rock’n’roll, but these influential blues songs were especially pivotal. Those records, especially the ones by Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside, influenced a handful of young rockers, who not only appropriated the raw energy but the stripped-down guitar, drums and nothing else set-up, and took that juke-joint sound into the rock arenas. The Black Keys’ first album was heavily Fat Possum-inspired and opened with back-to-back Burnside and Kimbrough songs, while Jack White was a disciple as well. The original version of the Kimbrough tune is the primal sound those hipsters were after. Koko Taylor: ‘Wang Dang Doodle’.

These best blues singers are known for their great voices and music that will stand the test of time. Note that this ranking is for blues artists only - no best blues/blues rock bands here. Many of the greatest bluesmen, old blues singers, and female blues artists are sadly no longer with us, but their legacies live on, often in rock artists who sold millions more records with versions of classic blues songs written by these great blues legends.

Hellhound Blues (Hellhound on My Trail) - John Hammond, Robert Johnson. 15. House of the Rising Sun - Odetta. Listen to The Saddest Blues Songs Ever now. Listen to The Saddest Blues Songs Ever in full in the this site app. Play on this site. You look like someone who appreciates good music.

I'm looking for some blues-rock bands that are heavy, and tend to use fuzz for that thick sound. The Sonics "Have Love will Travel" is also a classic choice, that whole album is awesome. Legendary Shack Shakers also have a few awesome live tracks (but without the upright bass it may lose a bit!) If you are looking for something a bit more "alternative" and less mainstream, I would go for "Love on the Rocks" by Burning Condors.
