HOLLIS TAYLOR: Absolute bird (double CD and 44pp Book). This is an extraordinary and important work, breathtaking in it’s apparent simplicity but raised on a lifetime of study, thought and contrariness. It’s clearly music, bearing all the hallmarks - but it’s also birdsong and we’re culturally not sure if that’s music or not; then there are the categorically non-musical sounds that play a central and continuous role. On first listening, tracks 11-19 - an island of pieces for violin (played by Hollis) and field recordings, seem to clarify a broad template for the collection as a whole. In other words, it takes a while just to absorb how to listen to this music - and that, in my experience, is a mark of greatness.

CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL Hollis Taylor. Absolute bird (rer megacorp ). ★★★★½. Hollis Taylor is a full-blown obsessive of the best type: a musician, composer, musicologist and ornithologist who is able to revel in the aesthetics of birdsong and analyse its patterns, methodologies and motivations. The fourth album from Manchester's Everything Everything sees them bending the rules and blurring the lines of genre elements that are pretty strange bedfellows. You would never think that high-pitched vocals, indie rock and dance-inducing electronica would work well together in any capacity, but this album proves otherwise. It is peppered with thumping beats, intricate guitar riffs and licks, and complex synth melodies – something that seems to be the band's signature, and musically, it is infectious.

Mark Hollis is the only solo album by the former Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis. It was released on Polydor Records on 26 January 1998, then reissued on Pond Life on 13 March 2000. In 2003, the album was released in LP format on Universal Records.
