The six string quartets of Béla Bartók, widely held to be the most important quartets since Beethoven, constitute one of the great monuments of twentieth-century music. This outstanding new volume brings together.
The Talich Quartet (Czech: Talichovo kvarteto) is a Czech string quartet founded in 1964, which has won several Grand Prix du Disque awards. Violin I. Jan Talich, Sr. (founder, 1964–1970). Petr Messiereur (1970–1997). Jan Talich, Jr. (1997 to present). Vladimir Bukač (1994–2000). Petr Maceček (2000 to 2011). Roman Patočka (2011 to present). Jiří Najnar (original, 1964–). Karel Doležal (until ?1970).
There are some slight variances of tempos and dynamics that aficionados may quibble over, and the Párkányí Quartet occasionally slows down too often where other ensembles speed up, most noticeably in the Allegro vivace of the String Quartet No. 1 and the closing stretch of the Allegro molto capriccioso of the String Quartet No. 2 - hair-raising passages that warrant much faster playing. However, the group on the whole is acute in attack and gripping in expression, thereby bringing off most of Bartók's intended effects and delivering the music with an authentic Hungarian flavor.

Old masters tackle the Bartok Quartets. The result is a more than solid recording in which all the facets of these folk-music inspired works are brought to the fore, even while classical form seems to be more important to the interpreters. Old masters tackle the Bartok Quartets.
