The band's fifth studio album High Country was released in August 2015, followed by their sixth Used Future in March 2018. During its early career, The Sword was categorized primarily as a doom metal band, with the group's members citing bands including Black Sabbath and Sleep as influences. In recent years, the group's style has generally been classified as hard rock or stoner rock. The Sword spent the rest of 2009 writing material for their third album, which took the form of "a concept album centered around an original science fiction narrative", and had more of a hard rock sound than the band's previous releases. Some of the new songs were debuted at the 2009 Fun Fun Fun Fest in November, and.

On High Country, The Sword decided to create a much more mellow album where their original influences take a backseat in favor of drugged out stoner rock. Gone are the groove-inducing, energetic riffs and epic scale. Everything now seems more modest, going for less bombast than before. The Sword definitely sounds different then before. The guitars traded in their previous chunkiness and heft for a more fuzzy tone. The drums trot alongside the riffs, creating a much more loose sound in comparison to the pounding, epic percussion that the band exhibited on previous records

High Country was led by the title track, which served as the album's primary single. After the trip into the studio, The Sword will be back on the road this fall. They have a mix of support shows for Opeth along with their own headlining dates. See their full North American tour itinerary for the fall below. The Sword Fall 2016 Tour Dates
