The Divine Miss M is the debut studio album by American singer and actress Bette Midler, released in 1972 on the Atlantic Records label. The title of the album refers to Midler's famous stage persona. Divine Madness (Bette Midler album). Divine Madness is an album by American singer Bette Midler and the Harlettes, released in 1980. It is a live recording taken from Midler's Divine Madness concert film, released the same year. The album, however, does not contain any of Midler's comedy routines and features only her musical performances from the show and it in fact only provides half of the songs that appear in the film.

Bette Midler’s 1972 debut doubles as a whirlwind introduction to her sly humor and formidable voice. She winks back at pop’s past, harmonizing with herself on the flirtatious ’40s standard Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and transforming Leader of the Pack into a revved-up romantic ride. Midler also flashes her bottomless chutzpah on the Broadway-rock hybrid Friends and the pointed Daytime Hustler, while her reserved take on the longing Superstar shows she can soar even when she dials it back. Bette Midler was one of the last major artists who emerged from the traditions of nightclub performing, after rock & roll changed the rules of the music business, though she was a singer capable of working both sides of the fence. Midler's approach bore more than a passing resemblance to the traditions of supper-club performers wearing their hearts on their sleeves for the audience, but she could balance sincerity and a deep respect for songcraft with a large dose of camp and broad humor, coupled with a love of R&B and girl group sounds that put her within a stone's
