S. Bach - Das Kantatenwerk is a classical music recording project initiated by the record label of Telefunken in 1971 (first recordings had been made in December 1970) to record all 193 sacred Bach cantatas. The project was entrusted to Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt. Each conductor had his own instrumental ensemble, based in Austria and the Netherlands respectively.

Cantata BWV 128 'Auf Christi Himmelfahrt Allein'. 1. I Chorus - "Auf Christi Himmelfahrt Allein". 2. II Recitative - "Ich Bin Bereit, Komm, Hole Mich".

Matthäus-Passion BWV 244. Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Mixed feelings, because the work in question is the Johann Sebastian Bach St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt (a conductor who thinks with his heart, and feels with his mind) on Teldec Classics International (catalogue 8573-81036-2) with the Concentus Musicus Wien (so far, so good, right?) but. with female soloists and standard issue adult chorus of men and women. Berlioz' "Les Troyens" won two awards, for best opera recording and best classical album overall. It's by Sir Colin Davis and the London SO, and was self-produced on the LSO's own label. OT Non-Bach Side Note Long live U2!

Koopman unlike Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt did not use boy choirs, but female sopranos, although Bach would have mainly used boys' voices to perform the soprano lines of his cantatas. Koopman's project started on Erato Records, but was nearly derailed when Warner - which had acquired the t Bach cantata recordings when it acquired Teldec from Telefunken in 1988 - also acquired Erato, thus making Koopman's new project a duplication within Warner's catalogue

Gustav Leonhardt began recording Bach's secular cantatas on Philips in 1990 after completing the sacred cantatas cycle with Harnoncourt. Those Philips discs were well received but are now hard to find, either on CD or as downloads, so I was thrilled to discover that Leonhardt, now 80, just recorded another pair of Bach's secular cantatas.
