Culture’s debut album established the roots reggae group in their Jamaican homeland and in the . where they were embraced by the rising punk movement. The delicious sunny-side-up melodicism, lazy horns, and languid grooves are as addictive here as their spiritual, social, and political insights are intelligent and poetic. The title song is a doomsday warning, See Them a Come rails against poverty, and Pirate Days is all about divine transformation. Lead singer Joseph Hill was a militant Rasta, and here he’s a street-corner prophet winning true believers.

For all its Biblical heft- the title was taken from a Marcus Garvey prophecy about chaos erupting on 7/7/77- Culture's reggae classic Two Sevens Clash, like Funkadelic or gospel, took suffering as a means for uplift.

Culture maade only strong albums for 30 years. They were riding the eighties just as strong as the seventies. And even way up in the nineties and the first years of the twentieth century the chopped wood. But hearing Two Sevens Clash again is a universe on it's own.

Two Sevens Clash" still sends a shiver down my spine after 30 yrs - and there's "Pirate Days", "Not ashamed", "See them a come" as well, all powerful & atmospheric. And of course, "Natty Dread Taking Over", evoking the days in the late 70's when rasta did seem a vital force & reggae was going "outernational".

Essential for any fan of Culture and their incredible debut LP. The 5 bonus tracks (dubs / versions / 12 inch mixes) are all classics with some great toasting from Weedy and I Roy. This release also includes some excellent photos of the group and interesting notes.
