With "Heavenly", E-Dancer (AKA Kevin Saunderson) released one of, if not THE definitive Detroit techno album. Everything on it oozes creativity, positivity, manifesting the warm, emotional, harmonic and melodic aspects of the sometimes overly cold and indifferent techno spectrum. Don't be fooled though, as this is no kindergarten techno. Many tracks off "Heavenly" have numerous times proved themselves to be real aces amongst the party crowds, namely the evergreen Velocity Funk, Oombah and Pump The Move (Kenny Larkin Mix).

Today, Kevin Saunderson has come forth with ‘Heavenly Revisited’, a revamp of the classic 1998 E-Dancer album, poised to fill out dance floors again.

A staple album since its release in 1998, ‘Heavenly’ is as relevant today as it was twenty years ago. It turned heads everywhere, got the underground scene buzzing and set dance floors ablaze like an accomplished pyromaniac. Now, the album is back for another round of Techno-flavored goodness. Revisited, tweaked and rearranged by Kevin Saunderson under his E-Dancer moniker, the album not only offers new additions to the album (‘Foundation’, ‘Into The Future’ and ‘One Nation’) alongside the 1998 originals, but is also poised to fuel a number of exclusive E-Dancer live shows

Saunderson released some of his best work ever as E-Dancer: in turns moody and explosive tracks like "Velocity Funk," "The Human Bond," "Heavenly," "Pump the Move," and "World of Deep," all of which are compiled here alongside numerous others. Furthermore, there are a number of remixes by such Detroit legends as Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, and Juan Atkins. The resulting collection is a fascinating glimpse into the soundworld of vintage Detroit techno as defined by Saunderson and a few of his likewise gifted peers.

For an album landing squarely in the ultra-revered classic Detroit techno canon, from the mind of none other than the great Kevin Saunderson, this otherwise perfectly listenable album boasts a couple of utter stinkers. The opening track 'Banjo' has a parping synth riff so irritating I cannot listen for more than about two minutes before hammering the skip button. At first I very nearly gave up on the album entirely, so bad is its intro! What's even weirder is that the second track, Carl Craig's remix of World Of Deep, opens with a gorgeous wash of vintage Detroit synths that makes for a far more suitable entrance into the moodscape of the record. Cry For The Future is almost as wretched as Banjo, sounding like a crap Italo rip-off made on one keyboard in someone's bedroom. Both should have been cut from the album long before it went to the pressing plant, and you'd have a much more enjoyable listen as a result.

Don't be fooled though, as this is no kindergarten techno. The rest is no filler either- this is intelligent techno, that relies more on moods and providing quality listening time than superflous complexity and steel hammer like, hard club hits. As hard as it may be to say it out loud, but this may just be Kevin's best effort to date. In this day and age when most techno artists have deviated to who knows where, releasing premeditated, souless and calculated albums, E-Dancer's musicality and ability to provoke beautiful states of mind and heart won't fail you. Essential for all techno fans.

I concur Marko. As someone who, when approaching the late 90's, had gotten somewhat disillusioned with house music, where it had become 'technique' driven, stylized and contrived, THIS album reignited my enthusiasm and love for what has been and become the soundtrack of my life. I listened to this album again today (30/01/12) and i am reminded once again of the excitement, energy and beauty that was given to me and so many others at a time when we all needed it back in the late 80's. When i play it, it goes through me with an emotional content that pierces my head and my heart. With tracks like Juan Atkins mix of Heavenly, Banjo and Behold being some of the finest pieces of modern 'house music' that still hold and give me the same feelings i had when i first heard this music back in 1987. This is soul music and this is what has been missing from dancefloors for a long time. I hear a lot of dance music, and its nice, but i DONT feel it, THIS on the other hand, I FEEL! There will never be another time like those days but playing this album can reignite those feeling for anyone who can understand and relish those fond days. Kevin Saunderson is for me, the finest of them all, peace, love and E-Dancer!
