La grotta di Trofonio (Trofonio's Cave) is an opera, described as an opera comica, in two acts (five scenes) composed by Antonio Salieri to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Battista Casti. The work was first performed in Vienna, Austria at the Burgtheater on 12 October 1785. The similarity of the story of the opera may have influenced Lorenzo da Ponte when he wrote the libretto of Mozart's Così fan tutte.

Antonio Salieri, as everyone knows, was one of Mozart's great rivals and La Grotta di Trofonio, first performed in Vienna in 1785, has certain similarities to Cosi Fan Tutte, which was premiered five years later. Both operas deal with the sexual uncertainties of two sisters when faced with lovers who are in some sense transformed - in Salieri's case by the magician Trofonio, in whose eponymous grotto the two men magically exchange personalities. It's conducted with huge affection and wit, played with great brilliance by Les Talens Lyriques and beautifully sung by a fine, if unstarry, ensemble cast.

La Grotta di Trofonio comes with a lavishly illustrated 116-page booklet, and you're going to need it, as this convoluted opera has more twists and turns in its Arcadian storyline then there are in the River Styx. Twin daughters plan to marry different men, but this is foiled when the men visit the cave of the sorcerer Trofonio, who changes their personalities. Salieri's orchestration, however, is truly brilliant and innovative, and Les Talens Lyriques present a late eighteenth century period orchestra where the sound of the band really makes a difference, down to the very intonation and blend employed between instruments. There are plenty of moments where some detail in the orchestra picks up ones ears, although this usually comes at the expense of the singers. To some extent this is rectified by the bonus DVD, which contains colorful and amusing excerpts from director Olivier Simonnet's stage production of the work.

The French musical ensemble Les Talens Lyriques was created in Paris, France, in 1991 by the harpsichordist and orchestral conductor Christophe Rousset. This instrumental and vocal formation derives its name from the subtitle of Les fêtes d'Hébé (1739) an opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau.

Now unfairly stigmatised (due to Pushkin and the film Amadeus) as Mozart’s sinister Nemesis, Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) enjoyed the more successful career as an opera composer. His comedy Trofonio’s Cave, written to a clever libretto by Giambattista Casti, was staged at Vienna’s Burgtheater in October 1785, just a few months before Figaro debuted there, and kept its place in the repertory for 30 years.
