A concert combined with Redentore, it was 15 July 1989 - the night was unforgettable, who can imagine a stage for a rock band in waters in front of San Marco and the festival of the Redentore together. The Venetians protest was largely unheard as the promotor Francesco (Fran) Tomasi, the Vice President of the Venetian Council, Gianni De Michelis and Nero Laroni (commissioner) railroaded and bribed their way to securing the venue. It was supported by RAI and was broadcast live on TV to over 20 countries with an estimated audience of almost 100 million. The concert was free to all who wanted to attend- what an invitation to the Floyd fans around Europe. You needed only a train or bus ticket to attend.

But Pink Floyd's show in Venice, Italy, on July 15, 1989, unintentionally resulted in the mayor and the entire city council resigning in the aftermath of their performance. According to The Washington Post, the city had arranged for a free concert to take place in Venice's historic Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) and which would be shown on television in more than 12 countries. Times quoted the council as justifying it by saying that Venice must be open to new trends, including rock music.

When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd after 1983's The Final Cut, the remaining members had good reason to assume the band was truly, as Waters' proclaimed, a spent force. After releasing solo projects in the next few years, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright soon discovered they would never achieve as individuals what they did as a band, both musically and commercially. When they arrived in Venice in 1989, they were met by over 200,000 Italian fans. The city's superintendent for cultural heritage vetoed the concert three days before its July 15 date, on the grounds that the amplified sound would damage the mosaics of St. Mark's Basilica, while the whole piazza could very well sink under the weight of so many people.
