Sweelinck - Trinity College Chapel Choir, Cambridge, Richard Marlow – Cantiones Sacrae - 2. Label: Musical Heritage Society – 5164156. Recorded on 9-11 January and 16-18 March 1998 in the Chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge, by kind permission of the Masters and Fellows.
Mixed choir comprising around thirty choral scholars and two organ scholars, most of whom are undergraduates of the College, under a Director of Music. The choir has taken various forms since its foundation in the fourteenth century, and has existed in its present form since 1982 when, shortly after the admission of girls to the University of Cambridge, female voices were used for the first time for the choir’s top lines. A noble achievement which should do much for Sweelinck's reputation’ (Early Music). Trinity College Chapel Choir seems ideally suited to this music. Diction is good, intonation flawless and the antiphonal effects well balanced. A worthy addition to the collection’ (Early Music Forum of Scotland News, Scotland). Other albums in this series.
The Cambridge Trinity College Choir demonstrate why Byrd's exquisite collections of Cantiones sacrae are considered a testament to the composer's artistic talent. It would be difficult to find another Renaissance composer who managed to unite such a high level of technical skill with such deep insight into the varieties of human emotion and the pieces on this album offer a sampling of his art. In his motets Byrd showed himself the equal of his French and Italian contemporaries as a contrapuntist and was an innovator in form and technique in his liturgical work.
The Latin motets included on this album were somewhere in between Byrd's rather official Protestant service music and the underground masses. Although there were some who argued for the suppression of any music in Latin, these were pieces intended and published for noble listeners and users who were familiar with what the booklet calls the "refined" style of the sixteenth century Continental motet. There is a personal quality to the music that comes through a bit better with a smaller group. The Trinity choristers, however, are gorgeous.
