Testimony of the Ancients is the third album by the Dutch death metal band Pestilence, released in 1991 on Roadrunner Records. Following the departure of former bassist/vocalist Martin VanDrunen, guitarist Patrick Mameli took over vocal duties. Mameli steered the band towards a more melodic and technical approach. The resulting concept album, Testimony of the Ancients contrasted brutal death metal riffs with melodic interludes and tackled what John Serba describes as, strangely philosophical, and oddly compelling, subject matter. After each song on the album, there was an instrumental outro.

Oh, and Testimony of the Ancients. This album uses the "metal standard" of 8 solid songs and interjects short, atmospheric transitions in between each one. While to some this is surely a negative feature, the transitions are as diverse as the songs themselves, and they're really too short to hurt the album at all. Most of them actually sound pretty cool, and one is even a bass solo by Tony Choy, his only true shining moment on the album. Tony Choy, the low-note madman you know from Cynic and Atheist, appears very subtly on this release, sticking mostly to the.

That’s what makes this record important, and better than let’s say Spheres ; which is too progressive and kind of loses the fire. Fortunately, this is a Pestilence album, and the band still knows how to write a damn fine song. In fact, almost every one of the full-length tracks on this album is good, even though they might not be nearly at the level of the first two albums. Secrecies of Horror" has an excellent fade in intro, before the circus-like, clunky rhythm of the verse arrives.

Musically, Testimony is given a soundtrack-ish element with the insertion of short, story line-enhancing instrumental/sound effect tracks between each song, and clean production values mesh with the group's more technical approach this time around, the musicianship solidified by highly respected session bassist Tony Choy (of Cynic and Atheist). As expected, Testimony is littered with quick-stop tempo changes and memorable, high quality death/thrash riffs, most notably on the doomy lurch of "Twisted Truth" and the disjointed, cascading riffery of "Prophetic Revelations.
