Live at Shelly's Manne-Hole. Live at Shelly's Manne-Hole. Live album by. Les McCann Ltd. Released. December 31, 1965 Shelly's Manne-Hole, Hollywood, CA. Genre. Plays the Shampoo is a live album by pianist Les McCann recorded in 1961 and released on the Pacific Jazz label. The album was recorded at the same residency as Les McCann Ltd. in New York but not released until 1963.

By the time this pianist and bandleader cut this live album in the mid-'60s, he had already been putting out sides recorded in concert for half the decade. The track record presented by this pile of sizzling piano trio sides proves Les McCann is the man when it comes to playing well in concert, from every understanding of that word from accuracy to zest, stopping along the way at both musicality and outrageousness. The last word connects with an indication of time and place that should always be an aspect of live recordings.

It was recorded live for Riverside on May 30 and 31, 1963 while Milestone Records was recording the same performances for their album titled Time Remembered. While each album has different tracks with no common ones between them, both capture the same beautiful performances. And make no mistake, the music is so beautiful to my ears that the only word I can think of to describe it is 'exquisite'.
