Parks' Song Cycle is indeed a classic, but I prefer listening to the songs the album had an effect on.

Song Cycle is the debut album by American recording artist Van Dyke Parks, released in late 1967 by Warner Bros. Records president Lenny Waronker. The album draws from a number of American popular music genres, including bluegrass, ragtime, and show tunes, and frames classical styles in the context of 1960s pop music.

For the Van Dyke Parks album, see Song Cycle (album). For the Graham Waterhouse works, see Song cycles (Waterhouse)  . A song cycle is similar to a song collection, and the two can be difficult to distinguish. Some type of coherence, however, is regarded as a necessary attribute of song cycles. It may derive from the text (a single poet; a story line; a central theme or topic such as love or nature; a unifying mood; poetic form or genre, as in a sonnet or ballad cycle) or from musical procedures (tonal schemes; recurring motifs, passages or entire songs; formal structures).

Van Dyke Parks' visionary 1968 debut, Song Cycle, rose phoenix-like from the ashes of his fabled Smile collaboration with Brian Wilson.

Van Dyke Parks, a slight guy with a fine line in bizarre, innovative instrumental arrangements, creates sounds that embody the very essence of capricious experimentation. And this first album is where it is at its most potent and enjoyable. Song Cycle (remastered and reissued alongside two follow-up LPs, Discover America and Clang of the Yankee Reaper) is the ultimate confection.

Song Cycle is an album to let yourself soak in, to stay with for a week or even a year. I also recommend listening with the lyric sheet in hand because the layered sound of ever-changing chamber orchestra can be heavy for the mind to absorb concurrently with the poetry. Being a fan of SMiLE most likely won’t offer a free pass to Song Cycle. The album is dense and difficult to infiltrate. There are traces of inspiration here and there, possibly a glimpse to what Brian could have done with SMiLE if he’d had the encouragement Van Dyke had in Lenny Waronker
